Tiverton

Saturday 13 June 6 miles

Jane and Hilary

The forecast earlier in the week was for sunny and warmer weather but it did not materialise. The day started cloudy and dull, seeming like it might rain. We put on a fleeces and jackets to start the walk. The sunny weather came later but the wind was still cool. We were taking layers off and putting them on again!

Parked in the car park behind The Rising Sun.

Lots of the paths were overgrown particularly with brambles, some with nettles, so we had to push through them.

Birds - lapwings, swifts, a woodpecker and a wagtail.

There were quite a few fields growing corn, it was fairly easy to find our way through at the moment but once the plants are tall it might be difficult to see the path.

Highland cows in one field, one looked at us as we got nearer and then went back to munching.

Passed a tent under a tree as we walked along the tow path towards the lock. I wondered if someone homeless was living there. We had our lunch sitting by the Beeston Cast Iron Lock on the Shropshire Union Canal. On our way back to the main road a young lad with a dog was packing up the tent and by the time we got back to the bridge he had packed up his rucksack and was on his way.

Walked through Tiverton

On Birch Heath Road we met an older lady doing some gardening

A field with cows in it with them all sitting down so we skirted around the majority of them

Ginger and Pickles for tea and carrot cake and a hot chocolate with all the trimmings.

Ashton Hayes Circular

Wednesday 8 April 5 miles

Hilary, Donna, Tracey and Jane

What glorious weather!!!

We parked on Peel Hall Lane as it is was quiet road. We walked towards the Golden Lion pub and onto Kelsall Road going past the village community shop. We went further along Kelsall road to catch a glimpse of the Grade II* listed, seventeenth-century Ashton Hall farmhouse.

Then we went back to Duck Lane and on to Shay Lane farm track, it was muddy in places. Vehicles had obviously been along the lane as there were ruts, but I am not sure how as some of the ruts were so deep.

It was very nice going down the tree lined track, as it was quiet so we were able to listen to the birds singing.

We came out onto Longley Lane in places we could see across the fields but it was too misty to see the Welsh hills.

We took the permissible path off the road and went into the field and followed the path around the edge of the field with the tall fir trees, we could see there were sheep and lambs in the next field. As we followed the hedge we found a sheep had escaped from the field. We found the stile in the hedge and followed the farm track. We met a farmer opening the gate to move some animals so we told him about the sheep that had escaped.

Having crossed a field we came out onto Brines Brow Lane then turned onto Old Lane, and took the fork onto Grange Lane.

We sat on some stones for lunch, it was really part of someone’s drive, a woman with a dog came through the field, I think it was the owner of the driveway but she didn't seem to mind that we were there.

A dustbin lorry came along the lane, I was glad we were sitting to one side as the lane wasn't very wide so there would not have been much space for the lorry and us walkers. We met a man with his son further down Grange lane and he commented on how fast vehicles went on such a narrow lane.

As we walked along the lane could see some of the glamping tents through the trees. We went to the end of Grange Lane where there were noisy rooks in the trees.

We turned left towards Ashton Hays, and crossed the road to a path going across the fields and we came to Gongar Lane. Here we crossed over the road to the track leading to Peel Hall. The Hall is a Grade II* listed mansion house was built in 1637.

There were horses in the fields next to the track. We followed the path around the back of the Hall and came out onto Peel Hall Lane walking along the road a short distance back to the car.

We went into Tarvin and found the cafe @Number 50 that Hilary wanted to visit and had tea and carrot cake, coffee cake and shortbread.

Lumb Brook Valley

Wednesday 23 April 7.3 miles

Jane, Tracey and Hilary

We parked at the car park on Stansfield Drive rather than on the road by the Grappenhall Heys Walled Garden. From the carpark we walked to the crossing place across Witherwin Avenue. Then followed the footpath going around the outside of the sandstone garden wall.

We continued on the surfaced path going between the houses and the newly turning green avenue of trees. Then going across fields and past the Grappenhall Cricket Club. We crossed Broad Lane, walking along a path going towards the village.

At Church Lane we turned right to walk through the village over the cobble stones towards Grappenhall Bridge. We did try to look inside St Wilfrid's Church but there was a service going on so we had to miss out.

By the canal bridge we turned right onto Canal Side, and the sign said leading to Australia Lane. As I had looked at another walk that went to Australia Lane so I automatically lead us to the lane and took the path across the fields. It is only after we had walked a bit of a way down  this path that I realised we should be walking through a wood and we weren't, so we had to return to the correct path.

We found the right direction through Grappenhall Woods to the wizard, then along Broad Lane to Hall Lane that lead into the woods. We should have gone left as we saw the ponds but there wasn't an obvious path so we went only slightly too far by going straight ahead. As we came to a more open space and houses I knew we had gone too far. The path, now to the right, was much more obvious from this direction. The wavy footpath continued through the woods, and we followed the new fence that had been put up, maybe new houses are going to be built there.

Reading the instructions more carefully might have been useful, as again we continued straight on as we chatted, but we went over a stream and I wasn't sure that was correct so we stopped and realised we had again gone slightly too far. Tracey got out her phone using the Pokémon Go App and we were able to see the paths more clearly than on the ground. So we went in the correct direction, meeting

Lumb Brook Road. We were able to walk on the verge until we came to the path opposite some cottages which would take us to Green Lane.

We decided it was lunch time but there wasn't anywhere we could stop on the narrow footpath, where the footpath met Green Lane we decided to sit on the grass and the stile to have our lunch. We listened to the birds singing.  It was a bit cool under the dappled shade of the trees so we moved on.

Walking a bit further down Green Lane we turned into Ford's Rough and followed the winding path along the wooded valley, with the stream to the left. When we reached a road, we turned left over the bridge then right through an A-frame barrier into the Dingle woodland. The Dingle offered us a lovely walk through the bluebells and the celandines. The meandering stream added to the beauty of the place and the new green leaves with the sun shining through them made for a pleasant walk.

We walked past housing until we reached Dale Lane, here we turned into The Millennium Green. Following the almost straight path ahead to Lumb Brook Road we turned left. When we came to the kissing gate for Parr Wood we walked though the wood, around the houses and back to the walled garden.

We wandered through the Grappenhall Heys Walled Garden, there were some people working in the garden, some were volunteers working with the head gardener. Digging the weeds out of the soil looked like quite a task. Some vegetables were already in the ground and the trees were full of blossom. We walked through the garden and looked at the large fish in the ponds.

Then made our way back to the car. Our 5.5 mile walk turned into a 7.3 mile walk!!

The Hollies was an easy choice as we were passing. We had hot chocolate, two teas, carrot cake and coffee and walnut cake.

Middlewich Canal walk + planning

 Sunday 26 January 3.5 miles

Jane. Tracey, Donna, Hilary and Carol.

We started off at The Big Lock and went along the canal to Croxton park and turned along the rivers towards the main road. The path was a little muddy in places especially as it had been flooded fairly recently. Crossing the A54 we turned into Coalpit Lane, and continued until we reached the canal and walked back to The Big Lock. We had our lunch in the pub - three beetroot falafels, a soup and a roast dinner.

We sat and chatted and planned our walks.
